Users of Yaz, Yasmin, or Ocella birth control pills:
you may be at elevated risk of severe, potentially fatal
medical conditions

The FDA and leading medical journals have brought to light inadequate warnings of health risks of birth control pills that combine the estrogen ethinyl estradiol with the progestin drospirenone

600% greater risk of blood clots, billions in profits—get the numbers, get the facts.

According to studies published in the internationally recognized British Medical Journal, women taking birth control pills using drospirenone as the progestin compound were more than 600% more likely to suffer blood clots than women who took no oral contraceptive. Blood clots in the lungs, called pulmonary embolism, is a potentially fatal condition. Blood clots in the major veins in the body can lead to Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT), a condition sited in several lawsuits already filed by Yaz/Yasmin/Ocella users in states across the country. With the information published and lawsuits already set in motion, not taking legal action now might affect how you are held responsible for accepting this elevated risk.

The FDA has already taken action, and 27 state Attorneys General have got results: will you?

The Food & Drug Administration (FDA) has already warned Bayer Healthcare Pharmaceuticals, the maker of Yaz and Yasmin, of its potential legal liability in marketing these drugs. (Ocella is distributed by Barr Laboratories, Inc.) Their television advertisements drew a warning issued via official letter in October, 2008. The regulators sited potentially misleading and dangerous language to describe the products' uses and risks, such as:

  • understating the health risks they pose
  • stating they could improve symptoms associated with PMS, for which they were NOT approved
  • stating that the products could reduce moderate acne symptoms, for which they were NOT approved

Early the next year, Bayer agreed to terms being pursued by 27 different state Attorneys General as well as the FDA to air new commercials, with the unapproved medical claims removed and the misinformation corrected, as well as more direct language regarding health risks.

If you have suffered from the symptoms or conditions which were inadequately disclosed and prompted action from Federal and State regulatory and legal offices, you may be entitled to compensation.

Know your rights to be protected from wide-ranging health risks

As court cases and Federal action may continue into the future, it is important to know today what rights you have. To understand that fully, you need to understand the many health risks which have been associated with Yaz, Yasmin, and Ocella.

The progestin compound unique to these birth control pills, drospirenone, is considered a diuretic; diuretics are prone to cause dehydration and dangerous elevations of potassium in the blood. This scenario has two major areas of impact on health.

1) potassium's influence on cardiac function Concentration of potassium levels in the blood stream can affect cardiac rhythm, which in turn can create disturbances to blood flow. These disturbances have been attributed to symptoms as severe and potentially fatal as:

  • strokes
  • pulmonary embolism (blood clots in lungs)
  • deep vein thrombosis (DVT)
  • heart attacks
  • cardiac arrhythmia
  • itracardiac thrombosis (blood clots in the heart)

To date, the FDA has received more than fifty reports of death from users of Yaz/Yasmin/Ocella from blood-flow-related causes such as these, some occurring in women of minor age, ordinarily at low risk of such conditions.

2) dehydration and gall bladder function As part of the human digestive system, the gall bladder works in conjunction with the liver. Prolonged dehydration as can be caused diuretics can be a precursor to gall bladder disease, and even kidney stones. Gallbladder problems are often mistaken for other gastro-intestinal conditions; symptoms might include:

  • nausea
  • diarrhea
  • soreness, aches, or pain in the right abdomen just below the ribs
  • jaundice
  • bloating

You do not have to accept being exposed to elevated risk of these potentially life-threatening medical conditions -- find out what your options are.

Billions in profits, lives at stake: don't get lost in the shuffle

According to IMS Health, an independent research company that supplies data to the pharmaceutical industry around the world, Yaz and Yasmin are the two biggest selling oral contraceptives internationally. In the first quarter of 2009 alone, they accounted for more than $1.8 billion in revenues for Bayer, according to one Bloomberg report.

With more than 50 deaths already reported to the FDA for symptoms related to the risks caused by drospirenone, it is important that anyone who feels they or a loved one has suffered harm because of these birth control pills act decisively. Moving quickly to get expert legal representation from an attorney familiar with the intricacy of FDA-related cases and drug failure law can get you straight to the facts you need.

If you are owed compensation, don't let bureaucracy or the global resources of pharmaceutical companies stand between you and your rights. Next to your health, it may be the most important thing to protect.
